Development of a small grant project to promote integrated conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of its components in
Poyang Lake

(February 27, 2004)

EnviSolve was requested by Nanchang Wildlife Conservation Association to develop a proposal to IUCN's Small Grant Program for Wetland with an aim to promote integrated conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of its components in
Poyang Lake in Februray, 2004. EnviSolve provided free technical assistance during the whole process from the proposal development to the project implementation and completion as part of its efforts to fulfill its corporate social responsibility.

Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China, supports a multitude of fauna and flora locally and regionally through its original, productive wetland ecosystem. Only one national nature reserve in northwest of the Lake performing pure conservation will be unlikely to succeed in long run in front of a series of threats originated from poverty and unsustainable living and production styles.

The objectives of the proposal are to promote: i) conservation through restoration; ii) ecological safety; iii) alternative income generation; and iv) recognition of distinction and
importance of the wetland in Poyang Lake.

The main planned activities include:

  • Habitat conservation and restoration, including hydrological regime regulation, meadow management and human activity adjustment;
  • Identification of new site for consideration by Ramsar Wetland Bureau as wetland of international importance and by State Forestry Administration and State Environment Protection Administration as a national nature reserve;
  • Demonstration of a portfolio of alternative livelihood development plans; and
  • Publicity and awareness raising at global, national and local levels.

The requested amount for support is estimated 45,525 in Euro.

The project was successfully completed in Februray 27, 2005 with a delivery of the following results:

  • Well-regulated/restored wetland habitats;
  • Nomination of a candidate Ramsar wetland of international importance and a national nature reserve with recommendations for conservation;
  • Generation of alternative income, alleviation of the over-exploitation pressure on wetland resources, and involvement of participation by women; and
  • Wide recognition of distinction and importance of the wetland among various stakeholders at different levels.
